Locating Water Leaks in Las Vegas, Henderson, Paradise, Boulder City, Pahrump, and North Las Vegas

The best way to determine whether or not a leak in your home is present is by checking your water meter first.

  1. Turn off all water sources both inside and outside of your home.

  2. Locate your water meter and check the leak indicator to see if it is moving.  The leak indicator could be a small triangular shaped dial or a small silver wheel that rotates when water is flowing through the meter.  If the dial is moving, chances are, you have a leak.

  3. Or, take a meter reading.  Wait 1 or 2 hours, and take another meter reading.  Make sure that no water is being used during that time.  If the reading has changed, you have a leak.

Next step is to determine whether the leak is inside or outside of your home.

  1. Locate your home’s main shut off valve.  Shut off the water at the valve.  Typically, the valve is in the basement or garage directly behind an outdoor faucet, or outside below an outdoor faucet.

  2. Again, check the leak indicator for movement or use the meter reading method.  Again, making sure no water is used during this time.  If the leak indicator stops moving or there is no change in the meter reading, then you have a leak inside your house.  If the leak indicator continues to move or there is a change in the meter reading, then the leak is outside between the meter and the house.

  3. If you are unable to locate the leak, you may need to call Water Wise Plumbing at (702) 605-6408.

Water Leaks Are a Serious Concern

There are many potential causes of water damage to your property.  Some sources of water damage, such as floods, burst pipes, and sewage backups, are obvious, and homeowners notice them immediately.  However, other sources of water damage are harder to detect, for example, water leaks behind walls.  Unfortunately, homeowners typically do not notice these hidden leaks until they have caused a considerable damage.

Hidden water leaks are hazardous because they can cause serious problems like structural damage and mold growth before they are discovered.  Excess water and moisture is absorbed into the wood, drywall, insulation, and wallpaper, leading to warping, stains, bubbling, and deterioration.  Hidden water leaks can also cause mold to grow and spread in areas behind walls and ceilings where it is not easily detected.  If mold in hidden areas is not found and addressed, it can cause extensive damage as well as health concerns such as allergies and infections in those who are exposed.

Regardless of the source, water damage must be dealt with immediately.  The damage caused by excess water or moisture will continue to spread and get worse until the source of the water is repaired, and the affected materials are dried and restored.  Hidden water leaks behind walls can be hazardous because the water will absorbed into flooring, drywall, ceiling, wooden support beams, and sheetrock.  If given enough time, a slow leak can result in severe structural damage.

Signs Of Trouble

While some water leaks happen behind walls out of sight, there are several signs that can help you detect these warning signs.

Here are some common signs of water leakage behind your walls:

  • Musty odors

  • Visible mold growth on walls and baseboards

  • Staining

  • Peeling or bubbling paint and wallpaper

  • Warped walls

  • Buckled ceilings and floors

Water leaks are a common problem, particularly in older properties with outdated plumbing and older unrepaired roofs.  Water leaks can often be detected in attics, crawl spaces, under concrete slabs and asphalt, and behind interior and exterior building structures such as ceilings, floors, drywall, baseboards, foundations and sprinkler systems.  Contaminated water can also rill a bathtub or overflow a toilet from a sewage backup.  This may result from back pitched pipes inside or outside of your home, a drainage system blockage, or from a blocked public wastewater system in your community.

Whether it is a slow onset problem from a leaking pipe or a major flood from a bursted pipe or broken washing machine, fast and accurate water leakage detection is essential for minimizing your loss, cost, and stress.  Identifying the water leak source is the top priority when a leak is suspected.  The next step is to eliminate the problem causing the leak.  Calling a reputable firm that specializes in water damage can be a great help.  The inspection is free and provides you with immediate assistance in getting appropriate resources to your property right away!  Allow WaterWise Plumbing to assure the safe and appropriate repairs, remediation, and restoration of your property.
